Aging With Grace AND Beauty!

Most of the time, I wander through my daily life happily in denial of how old I’m getting.  I mean serious denial.  I still feel like a young person on the inside so it’s pretty easy to do if I avoid the mirrors in my house. Problem is that there are lots of mirrors in my house. And my car. And at the mall.  Even that freezer door at the grocery store decides to remind me sometimes. Not to mention my kids are a glaring reflection of how old I’m getting.  Especially since two of the three are already taller than me (and I’m 5’9″)!  Today, I haven’t even seen a mirror yet but the whole aging thing is impossible to deny. You see, two women that I really admire have really got me thinking…

Everyday, my favorite email comes from my most adored beauty blogger, Cara Brook from Maskcara.  You probably already know about this enchanting sweetheart of a blogger who spreads beauty knowledge with a healthy dose of love and positivity on her blog.  My kind of girl!  Although she is young and gorgeous, today her blog post was about being beautiful at any age.  The post features Mother Theresa and Audrey Hepburn, both of whom were so beautiful on the inside that you couldn’t help but see them any other way, no matter how “old” they were in the pictures.  Reading through the comments on this article there were a few women who mentioned things along the lines of wanting to fight the aging process.  I doubt anyone would deny that beauty on the inside is what matters most.  If you are ugly on the inside, you can’t possibly be beautiful on the outside.  It’s just that in addition to working on the inside piece, a lot of women today want to continue to be beautiful (at any age) on the outside as well.

Cara’s insightful post and some of the spirited comments it inspired, reminded me why I started this blog.  I have only been doing this for a couple of weeks and I am still trying to figure it all out so I’ve just been writing random posts about whatever happens to strike me.  Today, I realized that I haven’t written anything about why I really started this blog and my YouTube Channel.  Basically, the reason is because I’m getting “old”!  Physically old, not mentally (that denial thing is no joke).  I’ve always been a beauty junkie and I love social media so, naturally, I enjoy searching for beauty tips online. Through my research, what I realized was that there aren’t many people over 40 talking about beauty issues (yes, at my age beauty is an issue!) online.  What I already knew is that the best way to learn is from other women who are dealing with the same things you are (beauty or otherwise).  My friends and I are always chatting about topics like family, home and beauty, etc.  It always feels good to share ideas and learn from each other!  Since I am somewhat of a beauty information hoarder, I am usually the one my friends can ask about a beauty product or issue and I usually have some knowledge to share.  If I don’t know the answer, you better believe the next day I am out there trying to find one!  That is why my friends have encouraged me to start writing some of this stuff down in a blog and filming some tutorials on YouTube.  I figured it would be fun to share something that I am so passionate about in this way, so I decided to give it a try.  There are so many fabulous beauty bloggers and vloggers and I can’t get enough of reading and watching everything they produce, even though most of them are half my age.  A lot of makeup and beauty tips apply to women of any age so I always learn something from them.  However, a lot of what works on their lovely, youthful faces and bodies, doesn’t work for me anymore.  What I hope to add through my content is some insight from the perspective of someone over the age of 40.  Sometimes it is just a slight tweak to a technique that the young beauties use, and sometimes it is a whole different ball game that we are playing!   Hopefully even the younger set can learn some things from me in the same way that I still learn from them.  I wish I knew more about anti-aging when I was younger!

When I started this post, I mentioned two women that got me thinking about aging today.  I already told you about the charming Cara.  The other is my all time favorite beauty idol, Christie Brinkley.  She was the hottest model when I was growing up and my first girl crush.  Nothing tops that first love!  I follow Christie on Instagram and today I saw that she just turned 60.  S I X T Y !!! I mean, wow.  Just wow.  How does she do that?!  I’ve heard she is into aging naturally, not surgically.  I don’t know if that’s true, and it’s none of my business.  All I know is, she looks stunning!  She has some wrinkles, yes. But she looks 20 years younger than she is.  I think her smile lines actually add to her beauty.  However she is aging, she sure is doing a phenomenal job of it!  Tonight, she will be on a TV special about the 50 year anniversary of Sports Illustrated Magazine.  I’m guessing she will be equally as beautiful as the girl who was on the swimsuit issue cover this year.  I can’t wait to watch!

It seems that Christie and Cara both have the same idea about inner and outer beauty.  I am grateful to them for the inspiration.  My goal is to work really hard at having both!
